Answer Engine Optimization After the FAQ Schema Shortcut

Google retired FAQ rich results, but readers still arrive with questions. Build direct answers without manufacturing thin pages or pretending schema is an AI-search switch.

Key takeaways

  • Google retired the FAQ rich result feature in May 2026; visible questions can still help readers, but FAQ markup is no longer a display strategy there.
  • Google says there is no special schema or writing style required for its generative AI features.
  • A direct answer should preserve the condition that makes it true, then support the decision with evidence, examples, and limits.
  • Create a new page only for a distinct reader job, not every phrasing of the same question.

01

The shortcut is gone; the reader’s question remains

Google removed the FAQ rich result feature from Search on May 7, 2026. That change removes a display incentive, not the human need for clear answers. Keep a question-and-answer section when it resolves real uncertainty on the page. Remove it when it exists only because a plugin produced markup and ten generic questions.

Structured data should describe visible content accurately and support eligible search features. Google’s current generative-AI guidance says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode and warns against overfocusing on markup. The work moves back to the answer itself.

02

Write the conclusion and its boundary together

Open an important section with the answer a person needs, but do not strip away the condition. “Yes, if…” and “No, unless…” are often more honest and more useful than a clean universal statement. Name the subject in the passage so it still makes sense when quoted away from the heading.

Then earn the answer: show the source, method, example, comparison, or operational experience behind it. A compact definition can be extractable without making the rest of the page disposable. If the summary contains every useful thought, the guide needs more original substance.

03

Organize around decisions instead of query permutations

Group related questions by the decision they support. One authoritative CRM integration guide can explain ownership, deduplication, retries, associations, and failure recovery. Publishing separate pages for “CRM integration retries,” “how CRM retries work,” and “best retry CRM integration” adds little beyond index noise.

Create a supporting page when it needs its own artifact: a complete comparison, calculator, checklist, experiment, dataset, legal context, or implementation sequence. Link it with an anchor that explains what the reader will gain. This serves classic search, generated answers, and the person deciding what to do next.

04

Measure whether the answer helped someone move

Review query and citation themes, but continue into reading depth, comparison behavior, useful downloads, qualified conversations, and sales questions. A passage can answer so well that it reduces clicks; a page can earn clicks and still leave the visitor confused. Both outcomes need interpretation.

During editorial review, ask a colleague to read only the direct answer and state what they believe it means. Then read the supporting section and identify what changed. If the first reading creates an unsafe or misleading conclusion, the answer is not ready for a person or an answer engine.
