SEO against GEO, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What it optimises for | Ranking in the classic results list | How a source is used once an AI system has retrieved it |
| Evidence base | Two decades of practitioner knowledge plus Google documentation | A 2023 paper (arXiv:2311.09735) and a contested body of vendor claims since |
| What the research actually measured | Position, traffic, conversions | Share of an answer’s word count among five already-retrieved documents |
| Required technical floor | Crawlable, indexable, reasonable Core Web Vitals | Identical — plus snippet eligibility |
| Special markup needed | None required; structured data enables rich results | None exists. Google states there is no AI-specific markup or file format |
| Durability of gains | Competitive but broadly persistent | Erodes as competitors adopt the same tactic; C-SEO Bench found 3 of 54 methods significantly positive |
Which one your situation calls for.
Choose SEO when
- You have not yet fixed crawlability, canonicals, or page experience — everything else is premature.
- Your traffic and pipeline still come predominantly from the classic results list.
- You need a measurement story your finance team will accept.
The wrong reason: Deciding AI search is hype and ignoring it entirely. The surfaces are real and growing, and the content work that serves them is work you should be doing anyway.
Choose GEO when
- The SEO floor is genuinely in place and you want to improve how your content is quoted.
- Your category is one where buyers are visibly researching through assistants rather than a results page.
- You have real data, real sources and real named entities to put into the content — the techniques with actual support.
The wrong reason: Buying GEO as a separate line item because the acronym is new. If a vendor cannot explain why their GEO work is different from good SEO, it is because it is not.

Terms used above
Search engine optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization is the practice of making a site easier for search engines to crawl, index, understand and rank, so that pages appear for queries the business can actually serve. It covers technical access, information architecture, content quality, internal linking, authority signals and the measurement that tells you which of those moved.
DefinitionGenerative engine optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization is the practice of improving how a source is used by AI systems that synthesise answers rather than list links. The term comes from a 2023 academic paper (arXiv:2311.09735, later accepted at KDD 2024) that measured how often a document’s content was reflected in a generated answer.
DefinitionAI Overviews
AI Overviews are Google-generated summaries shown above traditional results for some queries, assembled from pages in the ordinary search index and shown with links to the sources used. Eligibility requires that a page is already indexable and snippet-eligible in normal Search.
