AI Overviews are Google-generated summaries shown above traditional results for some queries, assembled from pages in the ordinary search index and shown with links to the sources used. Eligibility requires that a page is already indexable and snippet-eligible in normal Search.
Google’s May 2026 guidance states there is no special markup, schema or file format for AI Overviews or AI Mode. They run on the same crawl, index and ranking systems as classic Search, which means there is no separate technical track to invest in.
One large-scale measurement study (arXiv:2605.14021) found domains cited in AI Overviews scored measurably higher on an independent credibility metric than average first-page results — 0.732 against 0.645 on that study’s own quality score. Read that as: the quality bar is higher, not that a trick exists.

Where this goes wrong in practice
Confusing the acronym. "AIO" is used both for AI Overviews and, by some vendors, for "AI optimization" as a general discipline. Ask which one someone means before agreeing to a scope.
