No agreed definition
LLMO, AISO and GSO are vendor terms for largely the same work as GEO and AEO: making content that AI systems can read, trust and reference accurately. No academic or platform-official definition separates them, and industry sources contradict each other on where the boundaries fall.
Wikipedia’s own entry on generative engine optimization notes the terminology is contested. A Forrester analyst has characterised the cluster as significantly but not fundamentally different from SEO, and Google frames optimizing for generative AI search as still being SEO.
Watch GSO in particular: some vendors use it for "generative search optimization", others for using generative AI tools to produce SEO content. Those are unrelated activities sharing an acronym.

Where this goes wrong in practice
Commissioning separate pages "optimized for ChatGPT" versus "optimized for Google". They overlap almost entirely, and near-duplicate pages competing for one intent is a self-inflicted ranking problem.

The term comes from a 2023 academic paper (arXiv:2311.09735, later accepted at KDD 2024) that measured how often a document’s content was reflected in a generated answer.
