What is Consent mode?

Consent mode is Google’s mechanism for adjusting tag behaviour according to a visitor’s consent choices, sending cookieless pings when consent is denied so that conversions can be modelled rather than simply lost. Its output is estimated, and reporting distinguishes observed from modelled data.

Consent mode is Google’s mechanism for adjusting tag behaviour according to a visitor’s consent choices, sending cookieless pings when consent is denied so that conversions can be modelled rather than simply lost. Its output is estimated, and reporting distinguishes observed from modelled data.

The distinction matters when someone asks why platform numbers do not reconcile with the CRM. Part of the platform figure is a model, and models carry uncertainty that a dashboard number does not display.

In the EEA and UK, running Google advertising products with consent signalling is a compliance requirement rather than an optimisation.

The usual error

Where this goes wrong in practice

Comparing modelled platform conversions to CRM records and concluding one system is broken. They are measuring different things by different methods.
